The potential involvement of autophagy in different ocular diseases. Autophagy is involved in several ocular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, optic neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy (DR). In general, autophagic flux protects retinal cells from oxidative-induced insult. However, excess autophagic flux may cause cell death and lead to retinal degeneration, such as in cells of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in AMD and pericytes in DR.
